I wanted to invite people over for an informal party, and as I was deciding what to serve for a no-stress, no-fuss menu, I came up with the idea of a soup party. I thought this time of year, hot soup sounds good. I’ll make a few appetizers, buy some wine, purchase bread bowls from a bakery near my house and make two different soups. That way people have a choice of what type of soup they would like to eat, and can even try both. I’ll make them the night before my party, refrigerate, and reheat the soups in one of my Paula Deen pots right before my guests arrive. I think the flavor of the soup is richer when they are made in advance. The day of the party, I’ll have the energy to make a really great rich desert. You can get away with the calories when your dinner is soup and bread.
As my plan came together, I realized I had only one problem: I had only one stockpot. I didn’t feel like shopping for a new stockpot, but I did have time to order one online. I found a Magnalite 10 quart covered stockpot. It’s oven safe, so I can use it stove-top or in the oven, and it has a 50 year limited warranty. It will work well for my party and for years to come. Now all I have to do is decide which two soup recipes I like the best, complement with some homemade appetizers and finish the night off with a good dessert. Once I’ve made my menu list, I’ll go to work on a grocery list and head out to the store. I think this may become an annual party I’ll throw for my friends.

One of my nephews has this bad habit of eating chocolates most of the time. Though eating chocolates is not entire bad for health per say, we are worried that he might spoil his teeth by eating sticky chocolates most of the time. My sister has tried several methods to wean him from this habit but has not succeeded so far. We have even tried to lure him into eating dry fruits in place of chocolates, but somehow though he does not exactly dislike dry fruits, he has not stopped craving for chocolates and my sister had more or less given up all hopes. Some of the traditional recipes I’ve found for beef burgundy have been a little, how shall I say, offsetting. They’re complicated. Which often means I won’t even attempt them. Who’s got time? My simple solution is a Crock Pot Beef Burgundy that’s easy with only a few ingredients, mostly found in my pantry. With just three cans of soup and a little red wine, you can turn inexpensive beef stew meat into a gourmet style dinner. I like to serve this over some nice hot egg noodles for a stroganoff style. My best friend just had a baby and I decided to take her some food so she didn’t have to cook for a few days. She’s a vegetarian, and since we’re not, it’s been a bit of a challenge to come up with some dishes that reheat well and don’t contain any meat. After some searching, I came across this lentil chili recipe. I used vegetable bouillon cubes instead of beef ones to make it a try vegetarian meal. When it was done, I scooped out a small bowl for myself to taste this meatless chili. It was so yummy I immediately put on another pot for my own family. Read more…

I really enjoy eating fish, but I often shy away from preparing fish at home because it can sometimes be such a hassle. It wasn’t so much about cleaning the fish but cooking it. I never liked the flavor when I baked it in my stainless steel baking pan and I didn’t want to fry it. Then I found the perfect cookware for it – a lovely and practical covered clay fish baker. It makes it so easy to prepare healthful fish, I was surprised I had not heard of this product before. All you have to do is put the fish of your choice in the baker and add seasonings or vegetables, cover it, and place it in the oven; it does the rest for you. Read more…

It took me several years to get up the nerve to purchase a cold frame. I just didn’t realize exactly what they did nor was I comfortable trying something a little different that I had never tried before. You see I was raised on a farm in the Deep South where you don’t need anything more than a plot of good dirt, a little fertilizer and some water to get your plants to grow pretty much year round. Once I moved to the middle of the country, I realized just how limited you are to grow your own vegetables, herbs and flowers the way you can down south. Read more…
